Ridgeforge Gear exists because the off-grid camping equipment market has a problem: too many retailers selling gear they've never actually used, making recommendations based on spec sheets instead of experience.

We're fixing that.

I'm Matt, and Ridgeforge Gear started on a cold, frustrating night in my van.

I was three days into a trip, watching my portable power station's battery percentage drop faster than it should. My calculations had been wrong. By day four, I was rationing power like I was stranded at sea, constantly checking my laptop battery, second-guessing every device I charged.

The problem wasn't entirely the power station (though it certainly didn't deliver its claimed capacity). The real problem was that I'd bought based on a salesperson's recommendation instead of understanding how to calculate my actual power needs.

That frustration led to months of research, testing different setups, making mistakes, and eventually helping friends avoid the same pitfalls I'd encountered. I realised there's a massive gap between "this product exists and has impressive specifications" and "this product will actually work for how you camp in Australian conditions."

That's the gap we're closing.

Why I Started This

After years of extended off-grid trips, van conversions across Australia and internationally, and learning the hard way which gear genuinely holds up, I kept seeing the same pattern: people buying expensive equipment that didn't match their actual needs.

The common scenarios:

Someone buys a $4,500 hard shell roof top tent because it looks amazing on Instagram, only to realize they needed the extra space of a soft shell for their family camping trips.

Someone purchases a 500Wh power station for a week-long remote trip, then discovers it can barely run their fridge for two days.

Someone invests in solar panels without understanding real-world efficiency, expecting their 200W panel to deliver 200W consistently (spoiler: it won't).

My Background

After years spent exploring the outdoors - from extended off-grid trips across Australia to completing my own van conversion internationally - I learned firsthand how critical reliable gear really is. When you're days from help, equipment isn't a nice-to-have. It's what keeps you moving, powered, and comfortable.

I've made every mistake: bought the wrong tent for my vehicle, undersized my power needs, chosen gear that looked good but failed in real conditions. Each mistake taught me something valuable about what actually works versus what just looks impressive in marketing photos.
